How to Be a Pricing Analysis Expert

Do you have a degree in pricing analysis?

If so, please drop us a line and let us know…you’d be the first person with a pricing analysis degree we’ve ever met, and we would love to talk to you.

It’s far, far more likely that you or others in your company have come into pricing analysis through a more roundabout path. Perhaps you started in sales or finance and became really interested in seeing the bigger picture. Or maybe you’ve always been a “numbers person”. Maybe you have a degree in data science or an MBA. Or maybe you just ended up with the job because your company needed someone to fill a role and you were already there.

The point is that few people come into pricing analysis with all the qualifications a great pricing analyst needs. In fact, a whole lot of people come into the discipline with no formal training at all. But a lack of formal training doesn’t mean you can’t be a truly great pricing analyst. It just means that you’re going to have to take the initiative in making sure that you get the training you need.

To that end, we’ve put together a list of resources that we think would be really helpful if you’re interested in getting started in this discipline or if you want to take your career to the next level:

  • The Anatomy of a Successful Pricing Analyst—This resource aggregates input from other PricingBrew members about the ideal characteristics for a pricing analyst. Some of the traits mentioned here are things you have to be born with, but others are things you can learn. This is a good place to start your self-analysis to see which skills and capabilities you already possess and where you might need to get some training or experience.
  • The Fundamentals of Effective Pricing Analysis—As you might guess from the title, this webinar covers the basics—everything from what analysis is to segmentation and modeling. It even walks through a basic pricing analysis example to pull everything together. If you’re new to the discipline, it can help you understand what you really need to be doing and where you should focus your time and energy.
  • How to Use Pricing Analysis to Drive More Growth—The purpose of any pricing analysis is to make the company more effective, more competitive, and ultimately more successful. This on-demand webinar explains how asking the right questions (and finding the answers) can help you reveal revenue and margin opportunities that will help your company grow the bottom line (and boost your career too).
  • Driving Strategic Decisions with Pricing Analytics—Most often, pricing analytics tend to be focused on evaluating specific deals, identify pricing outliers, and measure price performance over time. But in the right hands, armed with the right questions, pricing analysis and analytic tools can serve a much more strategic purpose.

By themselves, these resources won’t make you an expert in sales analysis. But if you implement the strategies and tips you find here, you’ll be well on your way to becoming one of the true standouts in this field.
